ASSISTANT CURATOR – MATERNITY COVER
Assistant Curator (Maternity Cover) Full-time (37.5 hours per week), temporary from agreed starting date to 31st May 2020 Salary: £18,000 per annum Located at: Scottish Fisheries Museum, St Ayles, Harbourhead, Anstruther, KY10 3AB
The Scottish Fisheries Museum was founded in the old fishing port of Anstruther, at a property known as St Ayles, as a trust and charity in 1969, to collect, record and interpret the history of the fishing industry in Scotland. The Museum has expanded to occupy a number of adjacent properties and holds collections of over 65,000 artefacts, including full size fishing vessels, and received ‘Recognition of National Significance’ status in 2007. The Museum has a small team of paid staff plus significant volunteer support, especially through three clubs, the Boats Club, Model Boat Club and St Ayles Rowing Club.
The Museum has full Accreditation status and is graded a four-star visitor attraction by VisitScotland. It celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2019 – 20. This is an exciting opportunity to join us for our celebratory year.
3. Purpose of Job
This post is within the Curatorial team and will involve working closely with the Curator, Curatorial Trainees and Volunteers. It is concerned with all aspects of collections management, exhibitions and public engagement, ensuring that the Scottish Fisheries Museum continues to meet the highest standards in these fields.
There will be some evening and weekend working throughout the year on a duty management rota and around planned events and activities. You will also work closely with the 50th Anniversary Events Officer.
MAIN ACTIVITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Collections Management: In conjunction with the Curator, you will be responsible for aspects of collection management including:
• The care and management of the collections covering issues including acquisition, documentation, digitisation, storage, conservation and loans.
• The maintenance of collections care and documentation standards required for both Recognition and Accredited museum status.
• The delivery of a collections development programme.
Access and Audience Development: You will also have responsibility for access and interpretation of collections including:
• Assistance with the provision of an enquiry service, and with organising and supervising access to the Reserve Collections, Archive and Library.
• Contributing towards the preparation and management of temporary exhibitions (3-4 per annum).
• Input into planned gallery maintenance programmes so that our visitors receive a quality experience and our VS 4-star rating is retained.
• Contributing towards the creation, delivery, marketing and evaluation of events and activities to enhance any such displays or exhibitions and to attract new audiences to the Museum and collections.
• Representing the museum at museum sector events and on appropriate bodies
• Playing a part in ensuring a high public profile for our museums through giving talks, putting out press releases, posting on social media etc.
Policy and Planning: You will support the production and implementation of the Museum’s overall policies and planning and in particular will contribute to:
• The annual review of the Museum’s Forward Plan and any subsequent revisions.
• Board Committees as required.
• Collaborative working with other institutions (e.g. through partnership projects).
Budgeting and Finance: An annual Curatorial budget is approved by the Board in advance of the new financial year. The Curator manages this budget and any expenditure must be authorised by the Curator.
You may seek external funding (via grants or sponsorship) for specific projects and may use funds from the Curatorial budget as match-funding for this. Any such application should be discussed in advance with the Curator.
Management and Supervisory Responsibilities: As Assistant Curator (Maternity Cover) you will be accountable to the Curator on curatorial matters. The Curator in turn is responsible to the Board and Director in terms of finance, all development, trading and marketing. In the absence of the Curator, you may, on occasion be required to deputise for the Curator at such meetings.
You will be responsible for your own time-management with the support of the Curator. You may have supervisory responsibilities for volunteers and any temporary Curatorial staff e.g. trainees. You will:
• Take reasonable care for the health and safety of yourself and of other persons who may be affected by your acts or omissions at work.
• Actively seek for your own CPD, and keep up with current developments in Curatorial theory and practice.
• Work together with other staff and volunteers as appropriate to further the aims of the Museum.
You will act as Weekend Duty Manager and keyholder, working on a rota with other staff.
