CARMICHAEL PRESSES KEIR STARMER IN FINAL PMQS

Carmichael presses Keir Starmer in final PMQs to protect coastguard volunteer remuneration

Orkney and Shetland MP, Alistair Carmichael, spoke in Keir Starmer’s final Prime Minister’s Question Time in Parliament, calling on the PM to ensure that proper remuneration for coastguard volunteers is retained.

Speaking in the House of Commons, Mr Carmichael said:

“Like others I have always respected the Prime Minister as somebody who was in politics because he wanted to give service to his country, and he has earned our gratitude for that. In my constituency, those who volunteer as coastguard rescue officers also do so from a wish to give service to their community.

“In the time that remains for him in office, will the Prime Minister ensure that the money paid to them properly respects the respect that they earn for their service?”

Responding, the Prime Minister said:

“This is really important and I want to pay tribute to every volunteer. They show incredible bravery putting their lives at risk to save others. Our guiding principle is making sure we respond to this complex case by properly recognising their vital work. Ministers will continue to work with all parties, the coastguard rescue service and volunteers, to respond to their concerns and to get this right. We’ll be on it.”

Reacting after the exchange, Mr Carmichael said:

“The mood music around support for coastguard volunteers has changed significantly in the last month and that is all to the good, but we are short on time in which to fix this problem and restore fair remuneration. Whether it is Keir Starmer or his expected successor, we need to see a proper solution from the government in the coming weeks – before it is too late.”
