Karstensen Shipyard buys yard in Poland

Danish fishing vessel builder Karstensen Shipyard has bought a construction yard in Gdansk, Poland.

A company statement said: “Karstensen Shipyard Poland was established in 2018. Karstensen Shipyard had for a long time had challenges in getting the newbuilding hulls delivered from various suppliers in the Baltics, and therefore decided to establish its own hull production in order to become a total supplier and design, build hulls and equip it itself in Skagen . Since its establishment, the yard has had production in Gdynia on leased facilities, but with the acquisition of the new yard area, has secured the basis for continued hull building in Poland at a facility that is particularly suitable for hull production.

“Karstensen’s Shipyard knows the production facilities in the area very well. Part of the shipyard’s newly built hulls were built at the facility, then better known under the name Nauta Shipyard, before Karstensen Shipyard Poland had its own hull production in Gdynia. Nauta has thus built 20 hulls for Karstensen Shipyard in this area.

“The area provides particularly attractive production conditions, and is more than 3 times as large as the shipyard facilities that Karstensen Shipyard Poland uses today. The 10.4 hectare production area contains the following facilities:

“2 construction beds, a shipbuilding hall and 2 production areas, as well as an office and welfare building.

“Bed 1 is 280 m long and 36 m wide and bed 2 is 240 meters long and 28 meters wide and is equipped with 7 KONE cranes with a lifting capacity of 50 / 5 T and 150 / 16 T and can lift a total of 500 tons.

“The shipbuilding hall is 200 m long and 50 m wide and contains 10,000 m2 production area, which is also equipped with 6 KONE cranes which have a lifting capacity of 10 and 20 T. The area also includes a 5830 m2 office and welfare building with canteen and changing room. Another 250 meters of quay belong to the production area

“Shipyard Poland will continue its production in Gdynia until 1 July 2023, but will begin to move production over to the newly purchased shipyard in Gdansk during the autumn. The new area must first have renovated both the production hall, office and staff facilities. From July 2023, all production will be moved to the facilities in Gdansk.

“Karstensen Shipyard Poland currently employs 500 employees in production and currently has 6 hulls under construction.

“The investment in Poland will not affect production or staff in Skagen. On the contrary, the investment in better production conditions in Poland is expected to benefit and add much-needed capacity to the shipyard group, so that the Karstensen Group can continue its position as a leading total supplier of larger fishing vessels and other vessel types. “
