RECORD NUMBERS MARK 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF TIREE WAVE CLASSIC

Record numbers mark 40th anniversary of Tiree Wave Classic. Bakkafrost Scotland and its award-winning Native Hebridean Salmon celebrated a successful sponsorship of the Tiree Wave Classic 2024, which marked its 40th anniversary this year.
Recognised as one of the top windsurfing events worldwide, it was held from 12 – 18 October on the Isle of Tiree, in the Inner Hebrides.
With Native Hebridean Salmon returning as the headline sponsor for the fifth consecutive year, the event welcomed new junior windsurfers to seasoned professionals, showcasing world-class windsurfing talent in the island’s famous Atlantic waves.
Concluding on Friday 18 October, this year’s event attracted the highest number of entries in Tiree and UK history, with 87 participants bringing colour and excitement to the island and Argyll during an otherwise quieter time of the year.
Beyond the sporting action, the event also fostered plenty of community spirit. Every year, entrants and volunteers participate in a beach clean to support the local environment. This year’s event focussed on a deep clean of Hough Bay on the west cost of the island. Participants were rewarded with a BBQ on the beach where fresh Native Hebridean Salmon was cooked for guests’ enjoyment.
William Maclean, Tiree Wave Classic event manager said:
“This year, year 40 of the longest running professional wave sailing event in the world, has been an exceptional success, with double eliminations completed for all fleets and this being done in some of the most challenging conditions in recent years.
“This is no small feat with the highest entry ever and credit to our team for the delivery. The standard of the riders has been some of the highest seen so also, credit to them.”
Throughout the week, the Tiree Wave Classic delivered exceptional performances from top athletes, with Lucas Meldrum securing the Tiree Wave Classic champion title for the second year running, standing out in an intensely competitive field.
