In the first half of 2021, the Russian production of salmon in aquaculture increased by 57% – from 49.2 thousand tons to 77 thousand tons.

The cultivation of Atlantic salmon (salmon) increased 4.8 times – up to 14.3 thousand tons. Trout production increased by 36% to 62.7 thousand tons.

Salmon farming is one of the main projects of the Strategy for the development of the fishery sector of the Russian Federation for the period up to 2030. The program involves the development of two areas of fish farming – industrial and pasture aquaculture technologies. Growing salmon in closed water supply units (RAS) is promising and new for the Russian market.

Salmon and trout are in great demand on the domestic and world markets, and are among the most popular types of products among consumers.

“Salmon farming is the most promising area of commercial aquaculture,” said the head of the Federal Agency for Fishery Ilya Shestakov.

“Over the past 7 years, the volume of salmon production has almost tripled – to 116 thousand tons in 2020. This is approximately the same volume that we imported from Norway before the imposition of the sanctions, when the restriction was about 120 thousand tons of salmon. A further increase in the volume of cultivation requires the development of our own production of high-quality fish seed and fish feed – in these areas there is already groundwork, it is planned to create breeding centers and feed mills.”
