Seafood Processing



Seafood businesses encouraged to reduce waste, leading the way in the Scottish food and drink manufacturing sector helping to meet Scottish Government’s targets.

To support them, a guide has been produced for small businesses in the seafood industry with advice on reducing waste by Seafish, the public body that supports the £10bn UK seafood industry.

Aimed at the processing sector in Scotland, the introductory guidance to resource and waste management highlights current legislation and Scottish Government strategy on these issues.

Scotland’s Zero Waste Plan outlines a commitment that all businesses should recycle 70% of all waste by 2025. There is also a commitment to reduce overall food waste by 33%.

Jess Sparks, Scottish Regional Manager at Seafish, says: “The seafood processing sector uses large volumes of resources in their day-to-day business activities; from raw materials and packaging, through to water and energy. This guide outlines simple steps processors can take to get started in better resource management and waste reduction.

“We want businesses to be aware of current environmental legislation and how it impacts on their day to day operation, and helping businesses understand and manage their use of resources better is good for our environment and makes sense financially too”.

Introduction to Resource and Waste Management: Scottish Seafood Processing gives clear advice, guidance and pointers to external websites and resources to assist industry who may require further support from Scottish agencies.

To make improvements in the use of resources, Seafish suggests seafood manufacturers should consider the way they source, use and store materials; and understand how and where waste occurs in their processing and wider supply chains, and be able to quantify this.
