Sustainable Seafood Network of India appoints Ex-FoS Board Member. Sustainable Seafood Network of India (SSNI) has appointed today Ex-FoS (Friend of the Sea) Board Member Amod Ashok Salgaonkar on its advisory board. He is presently operating through his startup A2S2 Enterprises (look the profile of him here) which involves in seafood trade & related activities. SSNI is a registered trust mandated to bring together policy makers, scientists, industry members, sustainability professionals, organisations and similar peers to pursue common goals of developing sustainable seafood ecosystem in India.
The network has gained recognition as a trusted common platform at the national level in order to interact & influence local government and other government line agencies. It has established linkages with development agencies in government, stakeholders and mobilise development resources / funds from alternative sources. The organisation provides training, education & also runs capacity building programmes regarding sustainability in collaboration with fisheries universities & vocational institutions.
While speaking on Amod’s appointment, Chairman of the SSNI Dr K Sunil Mohamed said:
“We warmly welcome Amod in our network. SSNI has involved in boosting sustainable seafood initiative in India for few years now and we have various stakeholders engaged with us however I strongly believe that Amod’s entry will help us building movement stronger as he comes with a lot of experience which not involves only one function but various portfolio’s which makes his entry meaningful & adding value to our network”. Dr Mohamed is widely known figure in marine fisheries ecosystem of India. He was the Secretary of the Marine Biological Association of India from 2008 to 2018 & he headed the Molluscan Fisheries Division at Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute of India (CMFRI) in the past for very long time.
Continuing to Dr Mohamed, Convener of the organisation Dr Ranjit Suseelan quoted:
“I know Amod for quite some time now particularly since his association with Friend of the Sea. I appreciate his understanding about sustainable seafood business at early age not only about Indian Sustainable Seafood scenario but also about global know-how. He now known globally not only for his sustainability work but also about providing suitable solutions for building sustainable seafood business as he had prior experience of working with global majors for seafood category besides his active involvement in developing sustainable framework for Alternative Seafood. Perhaps he is youngest now in our team and we are counting on him for spreading the sustainable seafood initiative aggressively within a country by reaching out to maximum stakeholders in a chain.”
Among one of the notable developments for the first time in the history of India, the young research scholar Ms Saranya Sankar through Sustainable Seafood Network of India has received the confirmation of a grant of about US $ 6500 from Ocean Stewardship Fund (OSF). The grant has been awarded to her as a theme of MSC OSF student research grant & main aim of this grant is to support the India Kerala shrimp & cephalopod trawl fishery improvement project (FIP), to progress towards achieving MSC certification by 2024. The grant would be handed over to Ms Saranya Sankar on 24th June 2022 at an event “An MSC Ocean: Towards Sustainable Fishing in India” by Honourable Minister of Fisheries, Govt of Kerala Shri Saji Cherian.
Mr Arjun Gadre – Managing Director of Gadre Marine Export Pvt Ltd, Mr A J Tharakan – Chairman of Amalgam Group, Dr V R Madhu – Principal Scientist at Central Institute of Fisheries Technology are few of the other Advisory Board members at Sustainable Seafood Network of India.
