UK SEAFOOD SUPPLIER BREAKS £100M BARRIER
UK seafood supplier breaks £100m barrier. An historic supplier of fresh and frozen seafood has increased turnover past the £100m mark as it continues to grow, according to a news report by Insider Media.
Sykes & Sons is a family run business founded in Manchester by Joseph Sykes in 1862, trading in wet fish and Dutch shrimp. Today, it supplies to more than 500 wholesale customers, multi-national retailers and food manufacturers. It also has a production site in Maghull.
As a result of planning and commitment along with the consistent improvement in quality of frozen at sea products, by the late 1990s, Sykes was the biggest importer in England of Icelandic-white fish and prawns. Since then, the company has continued to grow rapidly, now employing over 85 staff in management and support roles and a further 40 staff in the production facilities. Although now only 5% of the company’s business is conducted through the fish market, the Manchester Smithfield Market does, however, provide a base for the company’s cold stores, distribution and offices which conduct the business.
For the year to 31 December 2018, J. Sykes & Sons reported turnover of £104.5m compared to £99.7m the prior period.
