UK Young Seafood Talent Announced – The Young Seafood Leaders’ Network has announced the young UK talent that will play a key role in delivering the Network’s objectives.

Seafish, the public body that supports the £10bn UK seafood industry, is behind the network, set up in October 2018, and aimed at nurturing and developing young talent within the seafood industry.

The steering group members are:

Femke de Boer, SWFPA

William Davies, Seachill

Michael Dick, Seafish

Megan Doxford, Marine Harvest Scotland

John Hester, Young’s Seafood Ltd

Sarah Hussey, Sea Farms Ltd

Emma McKeating, Independent Fishmonger

James Wood, Yorkshire Wildlife Trust/Consultant/Fisherman

Since its launch at the UK Seafood Summit in 2018, the network has attracted around 50 young seafood professionals from around the UK, all keen to meet, share knowledge and develop their career.

Marcus Coleman, CEO of Seafish said: “The group represent the diversity of the network and the seafood industry. Their part is to shape the annual programme of events and activities for those engaged in this group.

“The Network is gaining lots of interest from overseas groups and we are hopeful there can be some future connections between our various networks. We’re very much looking forward to the future.”

Sarah Hussey, Fisheries Biologist from Sea Farms Ltd joined the Network last year, she said: “I think it’s really important to promote the seafood industry to the next generation for career opportunities. I saw it as a great opportunity to come and meet other like-minded people outside of my remit, which is sustainability and ethics.

“I think it’s a great way to meet other people but to continue professional development which I think is currently missing from the seafood industry. Through this group I hope the network attracts new talent which can be developed.”

The Young Seafood Leaders’ Network is a platform for knowledge sharing and identification and appreciation of best practice. The goals are to:

The network is open to aspiring seafood leaders between the ages of 25 and 40 years of age who are passionate about their own development and that of the UK seafood industry in general.

The steering group will meet on Thursday 2 May for the first time to look at a programme of events and opportunities for the network.
