Master Fishmonger Standard gathers momentum as independent seafood sales grow. Julie Waites, Programme Lead for the Master Fishmonger Standard (MFS), outlines why rising seafood sales are creating new opportunities for skilled fishmongers and the continued development of the profession.
Independent fishmongers are enjoying encouraging growth, with the latest market data pointing to increasing consumer demand for high-quality seafood and specialist retail expertise.
According to the NSC UK Retail Report 2026 (Kantar MAT to June 2025), annual seafood sales through independent fishmongers are now worth £50.4 million. The sector has recorded a 1% increase in value, while sales volume has grown by 3%, with seafood penetration rising to 2.6%.
These figures reflect a positive trend for independent retailers, suggesting more consumers are recognising the value of buying seafood from knowledgeable specialists who can offer quality, provenance and expert advice.
For fishmongers, the current market presents an excellent opportunity to build on this momentum by promoting the freshness and quality of their products, expanding their seafood offering and strengthening customer engagement to encourage repeat business.
Supporting professional excellence
The continued growth of the sector also reinforces the importance of the Master Fishmonger Standard (MFS), which recognises excellence, professionalism and technical expertise across the seafood industry.
As demand for skilled fishmongers continues to increase, the MFS is well placed to support professionals working in independent retail, seafood processing and wholesale businesses, both in the UK and internationally.
The programme continues to assess and accredit candidates while providing ongoing support throughout their professional development. Monthly newsletters keep participants informed of industry developments, emerging trends and best practice, while invitations to specialist webinars, including those hosted by the University of Lincoln, ensure candidates remain connected with the latest technical knowledge and industry thinking.
Close collaboration with training providers also plays an important role, helping to ensure that learning programmes continue to meet the evolving needs of the seafood sector and equip future fishmongers with the skills required by modern businesses.
Investing in the future
The Master Fishmonger Standard is increasingly recognised as an important benchmark for professional competence and career development within the seafood industry.
By promoting education, accreditation and continuous professional development, the programme is helping to raise standards across the sector while supporting the next generation of highly skilled fishmongers.
With consumer demand for quality seafood continuing to grow, the outlook for both independent fishmongers and the Master Fishmonger Standard remains positive.
The achievements of successful candidates will once again be celebrated at the annual Master Fishmonger Standard Awards Lunch, held in partnership with the Fishmongers’ Company and the National Federation of Fishmongers. This year’s event will take place on Monday 30 November, recognising excellence and professionalism across the fishmongering industry.
