PFAS AKA FOREVER CHEMICALS

PFAS AKA FOREVER CHEMICALS

PFAs aka Forever Chemicals. There is clear and unequivocal evidence that demonstrates global contamination of the environment, wildlife and human populations by PFAS – the most persistent human-made chemicals known to date. PFAS pose an unacceptable risk for both current and future generations due to their extreme persistence, and the scientific evidence that links exposure to harmful impacts on wildlife and human health.

What is KIMO doing about it?

  • The KIMO General Assembly passed a Resolution to ban PFAS in 2022.
  • In 2023 together with the North Sea Commission KIMO issued a joint statement on the risks posed by PFAS
  • Together with 129 other European civil society organisations, KIMO signed the BanPFAS Manifesto in 2023.
  • KIMO continue to lobby policy makers to enact a ban on PFAS

Is it working?

Yes! Last week, the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union have reached an informal agreement to ban PFAS from food packaging, as part of the Packaging and packaging waste regulation, instead of waiting for the Commission to restrict PFAS under REACH.

This means that a ban on PFAS becomes could be implemented much sooner than previously anticipated.

The deal will now have to be formally approved by a vote in Parliament and Council.

What can I do to help?

We need to maintain momentum and keep pressure on the political establishment to follow through with a ban on PFAS.

From 4-15 March 2024, KIMO is running an online information campaign to spread awareness about the toxic legacy of PFAS pollution.
