ASC LAUNCHES STAKEHOLDER CONSULTATION ON SPECIES SCOPE EXTENSION TO CATFISH

ASC launches stakeholder consultation on species scope extension to catfish. Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) is launching a 60-day consultation today, 17 September, on the inclusion of catfish into the ASC programme. This specifically includes the catfish genera Clarias, Heterobranchus,Ictalurus, Ameiurus and Silurus.

ASC is seeking feedback on the overall suitability of the ASC Farm Standard in addressing the impacts of catfish farming as well as proposed species-specific metrics and indicators. Based on various inputs from experts and technical working groups, ASC believes that most existing indicators within the ASC Farm Standard are applicable to this species. However, specific metrics—such as those related to feed efficiency and fasting duration—require revision to account for physiological and production system differences.

Seeking input from stakeholders

Michiel Fransen, ASC Director of Standards and Science said:

“The ASC Farm Standard offers a strong framework to address the impacts of catfish farming.

“Our research shows that many of the current requirements already work well for catfish, supporting their inclusion in ASC certification. At the same time, some specific measures—such as feed efficiency and fasting practices—need to be adapted to reflect the unique characteristics of this species and its farming systems.”

Michiel explained that stakeholder input will be key to finalising the Standard:

“We’re especially looking for feedback on areas like sourcing, mortality limits, and fish health and welfare. The consultation process is vital to make sure the final requirements are not only scientifically robust but also practical and feasible for catfish farmers worldwide.”
