ICELAND FOODS LAUNCHES GLOBAL FIRST OWN-LABEL MSC-CERTIFIED RED SHRIMP

ICELAND FOODS LAUNCHES GLOBAL FIRST

Iceland foods launches global first own-label MSC-certified red shrimp.  Iceland Foods has become the first retailer globally to launch a Marine Stewardship Council (MSC)-certified frozen Argentinian Red Shrimp Fishery product under its own label, reinforcing its commitment to offering UK shoppers sustainably sourced seafood.

The new Wild Red Shrimp in Tomato & Chilli Sauce, priced at £5 or two for £8, is available across 190 Food Warehouse stores nationwide from 10th September.

This launch marks a global retailer first, following the certification of the Argentine Red Shrimp (Pleoticus muelleri) Fishery earlier this year. Achieving MSC certification in March 2025, the fishery became Argentina’s first coastal shrimp fishery to meet the globally recognised sustainability standard after a decade of dedicated improvements.

This builds on Iceland’s already extensive MSC-certified product range. Between April 2023 and April 2024, the retailer grew its MSC-certified range from 30 to 46 products, covering 73% of its seafood lines, ranking Iceland as the second-highest UK supermarket for MSC product coverage according to MSCs UK and Ireland 2024 Market Report.

Customers can already choose from a wide variety of MSC-certified options at Iceland, including wild pink salmon fillets, large North Atlantic prawns, breaded fish fingers, battered haddock fillets and fish pie.

Stuart Lendrum, Director of Product, Process and Sustainability at Iceland Foods said:

“We are proud to be the first retailer to bring MSC-certified Argentinian red shrimp under our own brand to our customers. This is an amazing product, but also an important milestone for sustainable seafood.

“At Iceland, we believe great quality shouldn’t come at the expense of our oceans, and we’re proud to support fisheries that are driving meaningful, long-term change.”

George Clark, MSC UK and Ireland Programme Director at the MSC, said:

“The certification of the Argentine Red Shrimp Fishery is the result of more than a decade of hard work and commitment to sustainable practices. To now see this product available to UK shoppers with Iceland is a fantastic achievement and great recognition of the fishery’s hard work.

“By choosing seafood with the MSC ecolabel and ‘Buying Blue’, customers can enjoy great-tasting fish while protecting dinner for future generations, and help to safeguard the future of our oceans.”

The news coincides with the MSC’s Sustainable Seafood September Buy Blue, Protect Dinner’ campaign, aimed at encouraging seafood lovers to choose only seafood products with the blue MSC ecolabel on for this month and beyond. As part of the campaign, MSC-certified seafood pasta is also taking centre stage, and features the red shrimp, showcasing how easy and delicious it can be to make sustainable choices at home.

The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is an international non-profit organisation dedicated to ending overfishing and protecting marine ecosystems. Products with the blue MSC ecolabel come from fisheries that meet strict sustainability criteria, giving consumers a powerful way to drive positive change for the oceans.
