ELECTRIFICATION MOVE FOR ECUADOR SHRIMP FARMS
Electrification move for Ecuador shrimp farms. Approximately 55,000 hectares of shrimp farms throughout the Ecuador will be electrified once the government manages to expand the electricity grid to productive areas of Esmeraldas, Manabí, Guayas, El Oro and Santa Elena. This important step was taken after the signing of the agreement between the Minister of Economy, Pablo Arosemena, and the president of the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF), Sergio Diaz Granados, in Spain. In which the credit of $ 200 million for the shrimp electrification programme was approved.
It is good news for the sector because the project has been more than 4 years late since its official announcement in July 2019, during the Government of President Lenin Moreno. However, in the current government, the President of the Republic Guillermo Lasso, announced that it was a priority in 2023, one of the commitments of the Executive to boost the competitiveness of the sector, after the elimination of the differentiated price of diesel for shrimp activity.
For José Antonio Camposano, Executive President of the National Chamber of Aquaculture, this achievement is key to the promotion of the industry, however, it must be complemented with other measures.
Promoting shrimp electrification will allow the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and toxic pollutants. In addition, this transition promotes the preservation of aquatic ecosystems, greater energy efficiency, and significant long-term savings. Moreover, it also aligns with international sustainability standards, conserves water resources and fosters innovation, preparing the sector for a more sustainable and economically stable future.
The National Chamber of Aquaculture, in close collaboration with the private sector, will persist in its efforts to realise this momentous achievement for the aquaculture industry. The adoption of clean energy sources not only represents an astute strategy from an economic and operational perspective, but also reaffirms the shrimp sector’s position as a vanguard in sustainability.
This commitment to sustainability reflects the future vision of the aquaculture industry, recognising the importance of environmentally friendly practices. In addition, by adopting measures that favour the use of clean energy, the industry will not only benefit operationally and financially, but will also gain the recognition and trust of global markets increasingly aware of the importance of sustainability.
