GSSI WELCOMES SILVER BAY SEAFOODS TO THE GSSI GLOBAL PARTNERSHIP

GSSI WELCOMES SILVER BAY SEAFOODS

GSSI welcomes Silver Bay Seafoods to the GSSI Global Partnership. The Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI), is pleased to announce that Silver Bay Seafoods has joined GSSI as a Funding Partner.

Sustainable fishery management is critical to the success of our fishermen, and company, and the enduring strength of our partnerships with fishermen, communities, and industry across Alaska. Silver Bay Seafoods is enthusiastic about this new partnership with GSSI. The GSSI benchmark plays a critical role in seafood certification by extending formal recognition to robust, effective, and credible seafood certification programmes. Relying on the FAO Guidelines for its underpinnings, the benchmark is a very useful tool for anyone looking for reliable and responsible sources of seafood. By providing transparency to the complicated world of seafood certification, the benchmark facilitates clarity and choice among seafood certification programs.

“Partnering with GSSI is a key step in strengthening the integrity of our industry. As we keep improving our sustainable practices, GSSI offers a trusted benchmark that helps guide us and empowers our customers to make informed choices. GSSI’s work to standardise and push seafood sustainability forward is invaluable to the whole supply chain, and we’re excited to be part of that journey” shares Rich Riggs, Co-Founder of Silver Bay Seafoods.

About Silver Bay

Silver Bay Seafoods is an integrated processor of frozen salmon, herring, whitefish and squid products for domestic and export markets. We began in 2007 as a single salmon processing facility in Sitka, Alaska and has grown to one of the largest seafood companies in Alaska, operating thirteen domestic processing facilities throughout Alaska and the West Coast. Silver Bay is owned by more than 600 fishermen who supply the company’s state-of-the-art processing plants with wild-caught, sustainably harvested seafood that is sold to customers worldwide. Silver Bay’s primary strength is in its combination of having state of the art processing plants and favourable logistics to support its operations; competent management and key personnel; an established fish buying system; and ownership by fishermen who represent over 80% of the committed fishing effort.
