KIT HANDOVER KICKSTARTS COUNTDOWN

Kit handover kickstarts countdown to Games gold rush. The Western Isles Island Games Association (WIIGA) will next week take a squad of over 100 athletes to represent their community at the International Island Games in Orkney.

On Wednesday 2 July, main sponsor Bakkafrost Scotland handed over the competitors’ kit ahead of the twentieth edition of the event, that will bring together sportspeople from all over the world.

It is expected that 4,000 participants will attend the Games, which will take place between 12 July and 18 July, with athletes from 24 member islands going head-to-head for glory.

The Games provide an opportunity for island athletes to compete at a high international level and will be one of the biggest multi-sports events in this year’s global sporting calendar.

Ian Laister, Managing Director of Bakkafrost Scotland, said:

“This is the tenth consecutive time we have had the honour of sponsoring WIIGA, and it is fantastic to be able to support athletes.

“Events like the International Island Games represent the very best of sport, bringing people together from all over the world to compete, and also to foster new friendships.

“The handing over of kit is a real milestone; it signals that competition is just around the corner and all the hard work and dedication is about to be put to the test. We wish all of those competing the very best of luck and are proud to be part of the event.”

WIIGA will take a squad of 105 covering 10 sports to the Games, which includes athletes, coaches, management and medical team. The team will take part in archery, athletics, badminton, bowls, cycling, men’s football, women’s football, men’s golf, women’s golf and swimming.

General Team Manager, Iain GG Campbell, said:

“WIIGA is incredibly grateful to our main sponsor Bakkafrost Scotland for its continued financial and marketing support.

“We know the company is committed to be supporting the communities in which employees live and work and the sponsorship helps local athletes make an impact on the global stage.”
