MOWI SCOTLAND PLAN TO DEVELOP ICONIC CLYDE HARBOUR

Mowi Scotland plan to develop iconic Clyde harbour. A plan to redevelop Carradale’s iconic harbour facility is being proposed by Mowi Scotland. The company’s investment would see the construction of a purpose-built shorebase, storage facilities and new pontoon.

It is hoped that the proposed development, which will sit in harmony with the surrounding landscape, will be a catalyst for further community regeneration, with Mowi undertaking a community engagement process to help identify where new amenities and facilities could be established to cater for locals and visitors alike.

“Carradale Harbour is an iconic location, and has seen a diverse range of activity and pressures over its lifespan,” says Ben Hadfield, Mowi’s Farming COO in Scotland. “We see scope to help alleviate these pressures and create something exciting that serves the needs of local business and the community at large.”

Mowi Scotland has been part of the Carradale community for the past eight years, directly employing 12 people, whilst contributing to the wider local economy. An application for planning permission is presently underway to secure an additional farm in North Kilbrannan Sound, which will generate 10 further jobs for the area.

Mowi has purchased and buildings adjacent to Carradale Harbour for its new proposed facilities. The new facilities will incorporate a farm manager’s office and a separate support building for storage and staff welfare facilities. These spaces would be developed alongside public-friendly landscaping and car parking cohesive with its natural environment. A new pontoon is also proposed, where boat owners and fishermen can park, organise and maintain their boats.

Mowi would also relinquish their current shorebase building on Shore Road and shared harbour areas providing an opportunity for innovative community development projects where amenities and facilities could be established to cater for locals and visitors.

Mr. Hadfield adds:

“Our salmon farm at Carradale has been a successful site for many years, enjoying strong community support even during our most challenging periods. We are very grateful for this, and therefore want to expand in a way that not only benefits our company, but also for the Carradale and neighbouring communities.

“As well as improving a vital amenity for locals, and setting the tone for further community development, we hope the regeneration would help reinvigorate the high energy Carradale Harbour has experienced throughout its history.”

Mowi has appointed award-winning architect, Ann Nisbet Studio, to create the masterplan. Ann Nisbet Studios has an extensive portfolio of projects working in sensitive sites in rural Scotland, particularly in the Argyll area, and has developed indicative conceptual layouts to illustrate the full potential of the redevelopment. The concepts take into consideration everything from proportions to cladding materials, to reflect and enhance both the immediate site and the wider coastal landscape.

A community engagement process will be conducted as the project develops.
