SCIENCE BASED TARGETS INITIATIVE VALIDATES NOMAD FOODS’ NET-ZERO AMBITIONS

Science Based Targets initiative validates Nomad Foods’ net-zero ambitions.
- Renewed science-based greenhouse gas reduction (GHG) targets advance the goals Nomad Foods previously set in 2021, including the aim of achieving net-zero GHG emissions across the value chain by 2050.
- Targets include a reduction of scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 90% by 2050, from its 2019 baseline.
- The business also commits to reduce scope 3 FLAG* GHG emissions by 72% and non-FLAG** emissions by 90% by 2050 from a 2019 baseline.
Nomad Foods (NYSE: NOMD), Europe’s leading frozen food company whose popular brands include Birds Eye, Ledo, iglo, Findus, and Frikom, announces that the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has validated its 2050 net-zero target and approved its renewed science-based greenhouse gas reduction targets across its operations and supply chain. The new targets advance the goals Nomad Foods previously set, in 2021.
The targets, which are consistent with the reductions required to keep global warming to 1.5°C as per the Paris Climate Agreement, consist of:
- Reducing absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 74.8% by 2033 from a 2019 baseline.
- Reducing absolute scope 3 non-FLAG** GHG emissions 35.0% by 2033 from a 2019 baseline.
- Reducing absolute scope 3 FLAG* GHG emissions 42.4% by 2033 from a 2019 baseline.
- Reducing absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 90.0% by 2050 from a 2019 baseline.
- Reducing absolute scope 3 non-FLAG** GHG emissions 90% by 2050 from a 2019 baseline
- Reducing absolute scope 3 FLAG* GHG emissions 72.0% by 2050 from a 2019 base year.
Nomad Foods’ Head of Sustainability, David Pettet, said:
“With food systems accounting for over one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions, the food industry has a crucial responsibility in supporting the transition of the food system to net-zero. As Europe’s leading frozen food business, we’re committed to helping millions of consumers enjoy more sustainable meals through choices that reduce environmental impact without compromising on taste, quality, affordability, or convenience.”
“We’re proud to have our emission reduction targets approved by SBTi, further demonstrating our commitment to play our part in tackling climate change.”
The company has already made good progress in reducing its absolute emissions by 40.8% and emissions intensity by 37.4% against a 2019 baseline in line with its first SBTi targets set in 2021. In 2020, Nomad Foods became a signatory of the 10x20x30 global initiative to halve food loss and waste in supply chains by 2030. It has already reduced edible food waste per ton of finished goods by 37.7% compared to a 2015 baseline.
Nomad Foods has also confirmed that 100% of its Scope 2 electricity will be purchased from renewable sources for all factories, offices, and warehouses by 2030. Its current purchasing figure stands at 96.8%.
In 2024, the company became the first food manufacturer to join the Move to -15°C coalition. This followed news of Nomad Foods’ eighteen-month industry-leading study exploring if frozen food storage temperatures could be increased, leading to significant carbon emission reductions and cost savings, without impacting product quality or safety. The Move to -15°C coalition is supported by leading names across global shipping, logistics, manufacturing and trade, dedicated to cutting carbon emissions across frozen food supply chains.

About the SBTi
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) aims to drive ambitious corporate climate action. It mobilizes companies to set science-based targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and boost their competitive advantage in the transition to the low-carbon economy. It is a partnership between CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project), the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF).
The SBTi call to action is one of the We Mean Business Coalition commitments. The initiative defines and promotes best practice in science-based target setting, offers resources and guidance to reduce barriers to adoption, and independently assesses and approves companies’ targets.
Targets adopted by companies to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are considered to be “science based” if they are in line with what the latest climate science says is necessary to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement – to limit global warming to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and pursue efforts to limit warming to 1.5°C.
