Seafood Processing

Two Hätälä products in the finals of respected seafood product competition. Finland’s largest fish processor will have a strong presence at the Seafood Global Expo event.

Finland’s largest fish processor Hätälä Oy will have a strong presence at the Seafood Global Expo, organised in Barcelona at the end of this month. Two of the company’s products have qualified for the finals of the respected Seafood Excellence Global Awards competition, held during the massive event. The finalists were selected from among eighty candidates.

Additionally, Hätälä has its own stand at the event where it will showcase its products to seafood industry professionals from around the world. The company’s Executive Vice President Matti Isohätälä says that in Barcelona, Hätälä will particularly focus on flamed salmon, a Finnish specialty that stands out from mainstream fish products.

“Both our finalist products are specifically based on flamed salmon finished over an open fire. Our stand’s product samples will be prepared and served by Jarmo Ojala, the chef responsible for our product development, and Michelin star chef Jouni Törmänen,” he says.

Hätälä’ s finalist products in the competition are Hätälä Flamed Salmon Fillet Rum-Maple Syrup and Naughty BRGR Flamed Salmon Burger. The former is sold in packaging in countries such as Switzerland and France, and as a seafood service counter product in Finland. The latter, on the other hand, was developed in cooperation with Top Chef winner and famed Burger Man Akseli Herlevi. The product, which is particularly intended for use in hamburgers, is available at the Finnish K Group’s grocery stores from April to August.

Exports to Europe and the USA

According to Matti Isohätälä, Hätälä is currently exporting its products to half a dozen countries in Europe, as well as the USA. The products are sold both under the Oulu-based company’s own brand, and under grocery store chains’ private label brands. The exports are also spearheaded by flamed salmon and flamed salmon-based products.

“We develop high-quality products tailored for European tastes that are easy and quick to use,” he summarises.

Seafood Global Expo is the world’s largest seafood industry event. This year, it is being held in Barcelona from 26 to 28 April 2022. The event is expected to host over 30,000 seafood industry professionals from almost 160 countries.

Matti Isohätälä considers the event an important way of forging a path into international markets.

“We will have several hundred new contacts with potential customers,” he says.
