WILD WEATHER FOR ICELANDIC FISHING BOAT

Wild weather for Icelandic fishing boat. The Icelandic fishing vessel Akurey has docked in Reykjavík after a five-day trip which started with a few hauls on the Reykjanesgrunn and ended in the Víkuráll Gully.

‘We had heard there was some saithe on the Reykjanesgrunn area, so we decided to start there. We had three hauls of very decent saithe,’ said skipper Eiríkur Jónsson.

From there, a course was set for the Westfjords fishing grounds.

‘We worked along the edge west of the Westfjords in wild weather most of the time. The weather didn’t start to fine away until Monday night. In spite of the difficult conditions, we did pretty well and have 120 tonnes for the trip. Most of it is cod and there’s some redfish and saithe, as well as a few haddock there.’

Eiríkur Jónsson said that there were few others on the same fishing grounds, although there were reports of a few trawlers fishing well on the Strandagrunn grounds.

‘It would have been a 150 mile steam there, and the weather meant it wasn’t going to be worthwhile. We also left the Hali grounds to themselves, and all the reports are that fishing was quiet there over the last few weeks. So we decided to finish the trip in the Víkuráll Gully for some cod and redfish,’ Eiríkur Jónsson said.
