A group of volunteers who help maintain two cemeteries has been given a boost thanks to Bakkafrost Scotland’s Community Fund.

The Gravir Cemetery Committee approached Bakkafrost Scotland for help covering the costs of maintaining the sites it looks after, including managing drainage issues and grass cutting. The team of five manages the cemeteries – one of which dates back to the 1800s – in the Gravir area of the Isle of Lewis, ensuring their upkeep and providing their community with a place of reflection.

Leading salmon producer Bakkafrost Scotland is committed to being an integral part of the communities in which its employees live and work and its Community Fund has supported more than 150 groups, charities, schools and clubs in some of the remotest parts of Scotland.

David Blair, Bakkafrost Scotland’s Area Manager for Lewis, said: “The volunteers keep the cemeteries maintained to such a high standard because they know how important that is to the community and to those who have loved ones that are buried there.

“This is a great example of what our Community Fund is all about – supporting initiatives that benefit everyone living in the area and enabling groups like the committee, who rely on volunteers and donations, continue their invaluable work.”

Sheena Macleod, one of the Gravir Cemetery Committee volunteers, added: “Our aim is to do what we can to help families and individuals at a difficult time in their lives and also to offer them a well-maintained place where they can come when they are looking for a quiet moment and some time for reflection.

“The costs associated with maintaining the grounds have escalated in recent years and support from local companies like Bakkafrost Scotland makes such a big difference to what we are able to do.”

Bakkafrost Scotland’s Community Fund offers support for projects that promote health and wellbeing, stewardship of the natural environment or economic development within the communities it serves.
