FISH FARM BARGE FIRE QUICKLY BROUGHT UNDER CONTROL

FISH FARM BARGE FIRE

Fish farm barge fire quickly brought under control. A fire broke out on Monday morning, 8th of January, on a feed barge that serves Cooke Aquaculture Scotland’s West Fara salmon farm, the company has confirmed, as reported in the Orcadian.

No-one was injured in the incident, which saw the Longhope lifeboat and Orkney Islands Council’s tug, Freya of Scapa, attend the scene.

The RNLI’s Longhope lifeboat was first on the scene, checking the area to ensure there were no hazards to prevent the approach of the harbour tug, Freyja of Scapa, which arrived at the scene with fire fighting equipment.

The lifeboat was on stand-by for about an hour until the fire was extinguished at about 8.40am. The fire was reported two hours earlier by the MV Hoy Head, a roll-on, roll-off vessel operated by Orkney Ferries.

A spokesman for Cooke Aquaculture added:

“The incident was quickly brought under control, and no-one was injured.

“We are working closely with the emergency services and an investigation is underway to establish the cause.”
