FISHERIES COMMITTEE TO ASSESS HOW ECUADOR TACKLES ILLEGAL FISHING

Fisheries Committee to assess how Ecuador tackles illegal fishing. A seven-member PECH delegation, led by its Chair Pierre Karleskind (Renew, FR), will travel to Ecuador to take stock of the country’s fishing sector and international commitments to fight illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, which led to Ecuador receiving an EU “yellow card” notification in 2019.
The delegation will visit Ecuadorian ports, factories and meet with representatives of the sector and national authorities from 22 to 24 February.
MEPs will meet the Production, Foreign Trade, Investment and Fisheries Minister, Julio José Prado, members of the Parliament and other national authorities, as well as those in the fisheries and aquaculture sector.
Fisheries MEPs will also visit Manta International Port Terminal, one of the country’s biggest ports, San Mateo Artisanal Fishing Port, the tuna processing factory ‘Eurofish’ and the Fisheries Monitoring Centre. The tuna processing sector in Manta is one of the largest exporters to the EU and, therefore, MEPs are interested in the processing methods and traceability of catches.
In order to assess the quality and production standards of the shrimp sector, also an important exporter to the EU, MEPs will meet with shrimp association representatives, in Guayaquil.
