FISHERIES MANAGEMENT PLAN FOR SCALLOPS IN ENGLISH AND WELSH WATERS

FISHERIES MANAGEMENT PLAN FOR

Fisheries management plan for scallops in English and Welsh waters. The Fisheries Management Plan for king scallops will set out the aims and objectives for the king scallop fisheries in English and Welsh waters and potential management approaches that will apply to all commercially harvested scallop (dredge and hand-dived).

The plan will apply to fishing vessels of all sizes and from all nations (UK and non-UK) operating in English and Welsh waters. In the UK, FMPs will help achieve the objectives of the Fisheries Act 2020.

The work is being led by the Scallop Industry Consultation Group Working Group (SICGWG) which is an industry led co-management group. On behalf of this group Seafish has circulated an information pack which is available here. This pack includes:

  • A two-page summary document giving background information on FMPs, what this means for English and Welsh king scallop fisheries, and key dates for the development process, and;
  • A one-page document listing upcoming in-person and online stakeholder engagement events which will give all stakeholders the opportunity to learn more about the progress made to date on the king scallop FMP – including proposed aims and objectives and potential management measures – and to give them the opportunity to feed into the development process.

FMPs are a new approach to fisheries management in the UK and need stakeholders’ involvement throughout. Anyone with an interest in harvesting, processing, selling king scallops from English and Welsh fisheries are encouraged to attend an engagement event either in person or at one of the online events being hosted.
