FISHING WELL ON BLUE WHITING OFF SW IRELAND

Fishing well on blue whiting off SW Ireland. ‘There has been excellent fishing and the tough part is keeping to moderate catches. It’s ideal to not have more than 300 to 400 tonnes in a haul, and the chief hazard is that when you try and keep to a particular amount, you can end up with a smaller catch,’ said Hjalti Einarsson, skipper of HB Grandi’s pelagic vessel Víkingur.
Víkingur is fishing for blue whiting and Hjalti Einarsson said that the first haul of the trip was taken last Sunday. He was preparing for the last haul of the trip, but added that he would have to wait and see if it would turn out to be the final tow.
‘Fishing is best in the dark and there have been fine hauls in a very short time when they’re fishing on strong marks. We’ll have to wait and see if it works out for us,’ he said.
He added that the trip started considerably further north than where Víkingur is now.
‘We had some good fishing to begin with, and then it slowed right down so we steamed a hundred miles due south. Down here we are due east of the southernmost point of Ireland and the fishing has been good here. There are fewer pelagic boats, as is often the case when the fishing is good. The fish is good quality and it’s larger than the blue whiting we have been fishing off the Faroe Islands,’ Hjalti Einarsson said.
