HÄTÄLÄ’S FISH DELICACIES FIND ACCLAIM IN EUROPE
Hätälä’s fish delicacies find acclaim in Europe, the company adds production capacity and invests in product development. Hätälä’s factory growth is progressing rapidly. The first two expansions of Finland’s biggest fish-processing facility are operational and the third is currently being constructed. By increasing their production capacity, Hätälä is meeting the growing demand for their products in Finland and the rest of Europe.
To get a sense of the scale of the expansion, Hätälä is increasing its flamed salmon production capacity tenfold. According to Hätälä’s Vice CEO, Matti Isohätälä, the company now produces 1 000 – 1 200 kg of flamed salmon per hour.
“Flamed salmon is our spearhead in Finland and in European markets. It is crucial that we can meet the demand,” he explains.
Hätälä has decades of experience in producing flamed salmon, a traditional Finnish fish delicacy. The company’s fish factory now produces flamed salmon by combining state-of-the-art technology with traditional roasting in front of an open flame. The production line has been built especially for flamed salmon production.
The Finnish company’s flamed salmon is available on all its export markets: Sweden, Denmark, Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria and Italy. Hätälä offers a range of flamed salmon products with different seasoning.
“The results of a survey conducted during the recent Grüne Woche event in Berlin showed that 97 % of the respondents liked the flamed salmon and would love to buy it from their local store,” Matti Isohätälä points out.
Overall, Hätälä’s turnover and exports are growing according to plan. In 2018 the company amassed a turnover of about 110 million euros. By 2025 the goal is to reach a turnover of 170 million euros, a third of which will come from exports.
The fish factory expansion also includes automated filleting lines which make use of robotics and AI, a significant boost to the packaging capacity, as well as new vacuum packing lines and refrigeration infrastructure.
Hätälä invests heavily in product development to create successful new products. In charge of product development is Jarmo Ojala, a chef who has worked in various top restaurants around the world. Hätälä also cooperates with Michelin-star chef Jouni Törmänen.
“Genuine Scandinavian flavours are the foundation of our products. We develop highly refined fish products to suit the European palate,” Matti Isohätälä adds.
Hätälä produces and markets quality fish products. The company’s production facilities and headquarters are located in Oulu, Finland. Its sales offices are located in Finland and Sweden. Hätälä employs about 185 people permanently and up to 300 people seasonally. The company also employs over 400 Finnish fishermen. Hätälä’s turnover amounted to 110 million euros in 2018. The company processes about 15 million kilos of fish per year. All products are produced in Finland using responsibly farmed or caught fish.
