MARINE INSTITUTE CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL DAY2

Marine Institute celebrates International Day of Women and Girls in Science. The Marine Institute is proud to celebrate International Day of Women and Girls in Science today, 11th February 2025.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, a United Nations Day which aims to recognise the critical role women and girls play in science and technology.

As Ireland’s scientific agency responsible for supporting the sustainable development of the state’s maritime area and resources, the Marine Institute provides a broad range of scientific advice and support. Many of the Institute’s female employees work in key services centred around science, technical analysis and research, in areas such as fisheries ecosystems, marine environment and food safety, as well as in corporate roles. With a staff of 249 employees, 52.2% are female, and 90% of our female employees hold bachelor, master’s or doctorate level qualifications.

The Marine Institute has a longstanding commitment to equality in the workforce and to encouraging young people to consider a career in the marine sector through our education and engagement at national school level, our annual Transition Year and Bursary Programmes, and as partners with many Third-Level Institutions in Ireland and overseas.

Dr Rick Officer, CEO of the Marine Institute said:

“The Marine Institute is proud to be an exemplar of the critical role that women and girls play in science and technology, and in understanding, protecting and developing our ocean resources. Over half our workforce are women and many are in leadership roles in Ireland and internationally in areas such as marine and maritime research, development and innovation.

“As an organisation we are committed to fostering the talents of women in all areas of marine science. Our current five-year strategy, Ocean Knowledge that Informs and Inspires, outlines our strategic initiative to advance equality of opportunity for all, with specific actions as a public body focusing on gender equality.”

To celebrate International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the Marine Institute will profile some of our female staff, showcasing their work, its impact and the many meaningful careers available to women. Follow the Marine Institute on FacebookLinkedInTwitter (X) and Instagram.
