MEET HI IN THE HAVVEKA

Meet HI in the Havveka. One Ocean Week kicks off next week, and Norway’sInstitute of Marine Research (HI), is very much present at several events. This year, it will be mostly about these Fs: fish, feed, research and film.
Norwegian feed for farmed fish
A ready-to-slaughter salmon eats about 30 grams of feed per day, which amounts to 2 million tons of feed per year. Today, a pellet consists of eight percent Norwegian ingredients and 92 percent imported. The government has set a goal of increasing the Norwegian share in fish feed to 25 percent. This corresponds to an increase of over 300,000 tons of ingredients.
The Institute of Marine Research invites you to a discussion about how we can manage this. State Secretary Even Tronstad Sagebakken will be representing the government.
Time: Monday 7 April at 3:30-4:45 PM
Location: Havrommet on Skoltegrunnskaien

See the North Sea with different eyes
“Everyone” knows the North Sea, right? The film North Sea – Nature Untamed provides an insight into the wild nature of the North Sea. A short version of the film forms the basis for an important sustainability discussion in the Vestlandssalen. HI researcher Johanna Myrseth Aarflot will talk about the collective human impact on busy sea areas like the North Sea. A panel will take the discussion further. The session will be led by Hilde Holdhus from Sarsia.
Please note that this event is held in English and requires registration.
Time: Wednesday 9 April at 15.30-18.00
City: Vestlandsalen in Vestalandshuset; Lars Hilles gate 22
Fish stocks then and now: From nostalgic coastal culture to today’s realities
If you love film, fish and research, then this event is for you.
We warm up with an excerpt from “The Sea People – a declaration of love to the coastal people”. Producer and director Elisabeth Kleppe talks about the hunt for film clips and what they can teach us about our ancient coastal culture. After a short break, we are back in 2025 and ask: Were there more fish in the sea before – or were we just living happily unaware? The goal is to become a little wiser about the actual state of the most important fish stocks. Those who will inform us are Research Director Geir Huse from HI, UiB professor Katja Enberg and fisherman Kristian Sandtorv, who also heads the Pelagic Association. Long-time fishing magazine journalist Kjersti Sandtorv leads the panel discussion.
Time: Thursday, April 10, 2:15 PM-4:00 PM
Location: Storsalen, Nygårdsgaten 5
