NESTLÉ PURINA JOINS GSSI

NESTLÉ PURINA JOINS GSSI

Nestlé Purina joins GSSI. The Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative is pleased to announce that Nestlé Purina has joined GSSI as a Funding Partner. Nestlé Purina is the first GSSI Partner from the pet food industry to join the Global Partnership network reinforcing the diversity of industry representation.

Nestlé Purina utilises a variety of fish and seafood items, sourced from around the world. Interestingly, much of the seafood used in their products are production side-streams – those parts of the fish remaining after fillet removal. In this way, their use of fish is a tremendous utilisation story, supporting the wise use of natural resources and providing a significant market opportunity for the seafood industry. Nestlé Purina seeks to expand its use of responsibly managed and sourced seafood. To this end, Nestlé Purina has set corporate goals for the ingredients in our products to be 100% responsibly sourced by 2030.

“Nestlé Purina’s intention in entering this Partnership is multifold:

  • We seek to collaborate to promote best practices in the complicated world of seafood
  • We seek to encourage other certification schemes to raise their own standards to gain recognition by GSSI
  • We seek to motivate fishing activities to adopt best practices and embrace responsible sourcing practices that align with Nestle Purina’s long-term sustainability goals. (See link regarding our Fish and Seafood Sourcing).

“We believe GSSI and the Global Partnership are well positioned to support us on our 2030 sustainability journey” shares Richard Draves, Sustainable Sourcing Specialist at Nestlé Purina.”

About Nestlé Purina

Nourishing Pets. Enriching Lives.

Working hard to ensure that the raw materials we use for pet food products are produced sustainably.

Collaborating on innovative solutions to tackle the most pressing challenges faced by the seafood industry such as labour conditions and poor environmental practices, as well as illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.

In addition, there are challenges related to identifying the precise sources for fish. Pet food products, our main use of these raw materials, primarily uses fish by-products – the cuts and trim left after fillets have been removed for human consumption. Typical traceability mechanisms for whole fish are insufficient, and sourcing by-products makes identifying the origins even more complex.
