Nova Austral launches first sustainability report

As part of its commitment to move towards being a company that operates with the highest standards of good practices, sustainability and transparency, Chilean salmon farmer Nova Austral has launched its first Sustainability Report, corresponding to the year 2020.

The report, which was prepared in accordance with the GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) standards, compiles information on the company’s social, economic and environmental performance and its impacts on the environment and communities, with emphasis on the initiatives developed last year .

During 2020 the company focused on materializing various projects for the benefit of employees and the territories where it is inserted, which involve both the communities and the environment.

Among other initiatives carried out during the year, it is worth highlighting the implementation of a Quality Assurance Program for the Porvenir Process Plant, which defined all the processes that ensure quality and compliance with the standards for making products. ; the implementation of a free-access complaints channel to reinforce internal controls, which is managed by a third party; the recycling of more than 80% of organic waste; and the incorporation into the Waste Management Plan, within the framework of the requirements of the BAP and ASC certifications, of a Hazardous Waste Reduction Program in the farming centers, where a period of 4 years was established to achieve the objectives.

During the year the company also achieved several certifications that confirm that Nova Austral operates under the highest ethical and compliance standards, such as the ASC certification for two farming centers located in Magallanes, the external certification of the crime prevention model and the Business Social Compliance Initiative (BSCI) certification. The latter supports compliance with social and environmental standards, in accordance with ILO Conventions, the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

“This first reporting exercise by Nova Austral marks a very important milestone
for the company in its objective of socializing the management of our operation from an economic, social and environmental perspective. It is also framed as a key step in our work to establish a permanent, open and transparent relationship of the company with the communities, suppliers, clients, shareholders, regulators and the industry in general ”, highlights Nicolás Larco, general manager of Nova Austral.
