NZ ANNUAL FLATFISH NET RESTRICTIONS SET TO START

NZ annual flatfish net restrictions set to start. Annual closures to set netting for flatfish within various Canterbury harbours in New Zealand will take effect on October 1st.
The closures, which will continue until 31 March 2022, apply to the inner harbours of Akaroa, Lyttleton, Port Levy, and Pigeon Bay around Banks Peninsula.
Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) fishery officers will be out on patrol ensuring everyone is adhering to and aware of the seasonal change, says MPI regional manager fisheries compliance Canterbury, Howard Reid.
“We’ll be happy to have a chat and field any questions about where and how the rules apply.
“Most people are keen do the right thing, so if you’re not sure please take some time to approach us when you see us about.
“If you don’t get that chance please don’t hesitate you can find all the rules on our website, or by downloading our fishing app.
“Alternatively, you could call into our local MPI office in Burnside and ask to speak to a fishery officer.
“At the end of the day this is about ensuring sustainability so that future generations can enjoy the sea as much as we do. We’re proud to work with the community to help make that happen.”
