OCEAN GROUPS CALL ON G7 TO LISTEN TO THE OCEAN AND ACT

Ocean groups call on G7 to listen to the ocean and act

Nearly 100 ocean groups from across the world are working together to demand ocean protection by the G7 Leaders.

Building on a new report by scientists, setting out seven key scientific and policy asks for G7 Leaders, they have launched a campaign across Cornwall calling on leaders to #listentotheocean

The campaign was launched with the unveiling of a massive image of the UK Prime Minister, on a barge near the media centre in Falmouth on the eve of the G7 Summit.

Director of the International Programme on the State of the Ocean and the OneOcean campaign, Mirella von Lindenfels said: “We cannot solve the climate crisis if we do not protect the ocean. G7 Leaders need to listen to the ocean and take immediate action to significantly increase protection for it and awareness about its role in making life on our planet possible.”

Professor Heather Koldewey of the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) and University of Exeter, said “This is a really exciting time for our leaders at the G7, not to talk about climate, and the ocean, and the economy, and well being, and human health, but to bring it all together it is all connected. The ocean is particularly important and is often forgotten or ignored. What we are really looking for from G7 Leaders is to listen to the science, and listen to the ocean”.
