OCEAN MATTERS PRODUCES RECORD NUMBER OF LUMPFISH

OCEAN MATTERS PRODUCES

Ocean Matters produces record number of lumpfish. Ocean Matters – the Anglesey based ‘cleaner fish’ specialist – finished 2019 on a high by harvesting harvested their 2,000,000th lumpfish.

According to an article in the Mowi Scotland newsletter, The Scoop, not only does this milestone make 2019 Ocean Matters’ most successful year to date but it is also a record. No other UK producer has ever grown this many lumpfish.

Commenting on this achievement, Daniel Phillips, cleaner fish production manager, said: “This is an incredible milestone and I’m really proud of the team that made it happen, all their hard work and dedication made this possible. The sustainable production of lumpfish plays a significant role in the welfare of our salmon farmed across Scotland. We look forward to another great year in 2020.”

Ocean Matters is the largest producer of lumpfish in the UK and Mowi is its biggest customer and collaborator. Mowi Scotland acquired Ocean Matters in the spring of 2019. At the time, Dougie Hunter, Head of cleaner fish and technical services at Mowi Scotland, said: “This purchase provides us increased capacity for cleaner fish production with great potential for future development as well.”

The use of cleaner fish is now a major part of Mowi Scotland’s successful sea lice control strategy and part of a larger integrated pest management programme at its marine salmon farms that includes other non-medicinal sea lice management solutions such as freshwater baths and mechanical removal.

Mowi Scotland have announced the purchase of Ocean Matters aquaculture facility effective 15th April 2019. The facility is located in Anglesey, North Wales.

“What an amazing achievement in our first year. To have a guaranteed supply of cleaner fish is really important for our business because it is an important part of our strategy to control sea lice. In 2020 our aim is to produce even more high quality lumpfish and continue to expand our customer base.’
