SAGB Announces Inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award Winner

The Shellfish Association of Great Britain (SAGB) has announced the recipient of its inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award, a new honour created to recognise exceptional service to the shellfish industry and to the Association itself.

The award has been made possible thanks to the generous sponsorship of Gary Hodgson of Venture Seafoods, whose support has enabled SAGB to establish a lasting tribute to individuals who have made a profound impact on the sector.

A Distinguished First Recipient

The first recipient of the SAGB Lifetime Achievement Award is Dr Colin Bannister, a figure widely respected across the industry for his fairness, insight, and willingness to speak candidly on issues affecting both industry and management.

Over many years, Dr Bannister has carried out extraordinary work in support of the shellfish sector, demonstrating a consistent and passionate commitment to its sustainability and long-term success. His thoughtful approach, deep knowledge, and readiness to challenge constructively have made him a leading light within the community.

The award was formally announced at a recent SAGB Board meeting and will be presented to Dr Bannister at the SAGB Conference in July.

David Jarrad, CEO at Shellfish Association of Great Britain said “SAGB are delighted to establish this award, to give recognition to those that don’t often gain the credit that they deserve.  Colin should undoubtedly be the first to be awarded, with his inextinguishable dedication and care towards ensuring that fisheries management is adequate and scientifically informed, for the long-term sustainability of the industry. Many thanks to Gary for facilitating this award”

SAGB Vice President Dr Peter Hunt welcomed the introduction of the award and praised its first honouree: “I think the Lifetime Achievement Award is an excellent proposal. Throughout my period at SAGB, one person absolutely stood out as a contributor to the Association and the shellfish industry; Colin Bannister’s knowledge of and total commitment to the shellfish industry and the Shellfish Association of Great Britain were unchallenged, and I know that this continues to this day. It is very appropriate that Colin should be the first Lifetime Achievement Award holder.”

By establishing the Lifetime Achievement Award, SAGB aims to highlight the individuals whose dedication, expertise, and leadership help shape the future of the UK shellfish sector. Dr Bannister’s recognition sets a high benchmark for future recipients and underscores the value of long-term commitment to the industry.

Fish Focus and the SAGB team extends their warmest congratulations to Dr Bannister on this well-deserved honour.
