SFPA WELCOMES PUBLICATION OF THE 2025 EFCA REM TECHNICAL GUIDELINES

SFPA welcomes publication of the 2025 EFCA REM Technical Guidelines. The Sea-Fisheries Protection Authority (SFPA) welcomes the recent publication of the 2025 European Fisheries Control Agency’s (EFCA’s) Technical Guidelines for the use of Remote Electronic Monitoring systems (REM) for fisheries control in the EU. The guidelines were developed as a result of close co-operation between EU member states including Ireland. REM technologies, such as cameras, GPS and sensors will form important compliance measuring tools in relation to the landing obligation and this specification provides clear guidance on equipment, data handling and system requirements.
The document published by EFCA sets out the current technical guidelines and reflects the latest understanding and advancements in the application of REM systems for fisheries control and will be significant in ensuring a harmonised approach to the implementation of EU Regulations (Article 13 of 2023/2842). Members of the Irish fishing industry are encouraged to read this comprehensive document to deepen their understanding of how REM systems function, what specifications are being considered and how these guidelines may impact them in the future.
The SFPA is committed to supporting compliance with both new and existing legislation and is available to provide guidance. For assistance or further details on the guidelines, please contact: sfpafood&fisheriessupport@sfpa.ie
