UK Seafood Federation Welcomes DEFRA Push on Public Sector Food Procurement

The UK Seafood Federation has welcomed new measures from the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) aimed at strengthening local and sustainable food procurement across England’s public sector.

Under the initiative, selected local authorities will receive grant funding to improve how food is sourced for schools, hospitals and other public services. The announcement was made by Food Security Minister Dame Angela Eagle, highlighting the opportunity to influence a sector that spends nearly £5 billion annually on food and catering.

The move is intended to support public health, boost local businesses and help build a more resilient and sustainable food supply chain.

Dan Aherne, CEO of Woocheen Group, which includes New England Seafoods Limited, and lead for the UK Seafood Federation’s seafood consumption growth initiative, welcomed the announcement:

“Our Federation is committed to increasing seafood consumption across the UK. The leadership shown by Minister Eagle in promoting healthier, sustainably sourced food within local authorities and communities is very encouraging.

“We believe our members are well placed to support councils in making informed seafood choices—helping meet NHS dietary guidelines while delivering positive health outcomes for consumers.”

Dan Aherne added that the Federation stands ready to assist public sector organisations with seafood procurement, including sourcing British products and developing cost-effective menus that deliver both nutritional and environmental benefits.
