ASC TO CO-ORGANISE CLIMATE CHANGE SEMINAR

ASC to co-organise Climate Change Seminar at North Atlantic Seafood Forum. ASC is notching up a first this month, by collaborating with Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA) and Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), to co-organise a seminar on climate change: consequences, positioning and opportunities for seafood, at the North Atlantic Seafood Forum (NASF) on Thursday 10^th June 2021 at 1300 CET.

The seminar, chaired by Mike Mitchell from Fair Seas Ltd, features an impressive international line-up of speakers – from the Foreign Minister of Iceland, Guðlaugur Þór Þórðarson, to Geir Ottersen, author oft he IPPC report, and Lesley Mitchell from Forum for the Future, among others –  taking an in-depth look into the effects of climate change on businesses throughout the value chain.

Presentations include: carbon measurement in the supply chain; the important role of sustainable food production in tackling the climate emergency; how climate change affects the distribution of fish stocks; consumer perspectives and trends in sustainability; and how climate change shapes the broader food landscape.

The session will wind up with a Q&A session in which representatives from fisheries, aquaculture, foodservice, retail and seaweed, reflect on the effects of climate change on their own sectors and businesses.

Ray Hilborn, University of Washington, will reflect on it all, with a look at the position of seafoods in a carbon-free society.

ASC believes that responsible seafood must be part of the climate change solution, so we are delighted to collaborate with other like-minded NGOs to bring together speakers from across the globe, to look at how it affects the wider seafood sector and to seek potential solutions,”

In a separate session at NASF, on Tuesday 8th June at 1300, our CEO Chris Ninnes will talk about the vital issue of sustainable feed in a responsible aquaculture industry, and introduce ASC’s first of its kind Feed Standard, which is due to be released shortly. The Standard will provide a level playing field within the feed sustainability debate, by including key impacts across all key ingredient groups. This will enable feed producers to address impacts in a holistic manner, to act as gatekeepers, and be a driver for change.
