EFCA ADOPTS ITS WORK PROGRAMME FOR 2025

EFCA ADOPTS ITS WORK PROGRAMME

EFCA adopts its work programme for 2025. The European Fisheries Control Agency held its 43rd Administrative Board meeting in Vigo recently. The Board members have adopted the Single Programming Document (SPD), which contains the Multiannual work programme 2025-2029 and the EFCA´s work programme for 2025, with an annual budget of 31 million EUR. This document is a key planning tool to deliver EFCA’s mandate.

EFCA will keep assisting the EU Member States through operational coordination of their control and inspection activities. Specific work will be devoted to the improvement of common procedures, methodologies and best practices in support of the EFCA´s joint deployment plans.

The next five years will therefore be shaped by the continued need for cooperation and innovation in the Agency’s approach to fisheries control. Next year, the Agency´s focus will be defined by the robust support to be provided for the Commission and Member States in preparing to apply the revised Fisheries Control Regulation, particularly the new requirements introduced by the rules. Moreover, 2025 will see the launch of the procurement process for EFCA’s chartered fisheries offshore patrol vessels.

In the international remit, EFCA will implement a new project in Western Africa, and possibly in Central Africa, and the Southwestern Indian Ocean. EFCA’s role remains crucial in underpinning the EU commitment in the fight against illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

2025 also marks the 20th year anniversary of EFCA’s creation. “The funding of EFCA will be celebrated upholding the same principles that have always guided EFCA’s mission: coordination, assistance and cooperation. By working closely with the European Commission, Member States, and international partners, our aim is to delivering the highest standards of fisheries control and surveillance,” said EFCA Executive Director, Dr Susan Steele.

EFCA is a European Union agency that promotes the highest common standards for the control, inspection and surveillance under the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). EFCA was established to organise operational coordination activities by the Member States and to assist them to cooperate so as to comply with the rules in order to ensure its effective and uniform application.

The added value of the work of the agency lies in its contribution to sustainable fisheries by enhancing compliance with conservation and management measures and to a European-wide level playing field for the fishing industry.
