GRUPO CALVO ELIMINATES PLASTIC PACKAGING OF NEW SEAFOOD LINE
Grupo Calvo eliminates plastic packaging of new seafood line. Grupo Calvo has eliminated plastic from the packaging of its new Foodie salad line, offering a more sustainable packaging alternative to the consumer. The initiative will contribute to meeting the target set for 2025 by which the company commits itself to making at least 95% of the materials put on the market to be recyclable.
Since Grupo Calvo entered the ready-to-eat salads segment, more than 25 years ago, the company has worked on packaging design, achieving a practical product, easy to consume and now made with 100% recyclable material. The new references launched under the Foodie range eliminate the usual plastic lid and fork in this type of format.
“Grupo Calvo’s products are made taking into consideration the attributes of taste, practicality, health and sustainability. Sustainability is one of the attributes that is gaining more relevance and the company is allocating more resources year after year to the launch of new products with added value from this perspective, and the most recent example is found in the new range of Foodie salads,” affirms Mariví Sánchez Jiménez, Director of Sustainability and Communication of Grupo Calvo.
In the canned food category, all the containers used are 100% recyclable, both in their traditional format and in the innovative Vuelca Fácil® format also launched this year. With its own technology, Vuelca Fácil® achieves additional environmental benefits such as a 35% lower contribution to climate change compared to products currently on the market. The result of this lower impact comes from a lighter packaging and oil reduction through more precise dosing. 15 grams of oil are removed per can, keeping the same amount of tuna.
Continuous improvement in the ecodesign of packaging will contribute to the company’s sustainability strategy defined in the Responsible Commitment 2025 initiative, which marks the fulfillment of 17 objectives in the areas of oceans, environment and people. Among these objectives, Grupo Calvo has committed itself to ensuring that at least 95% of the materials placed on the market are 100% recyclable and that at least 85% of the materials used are recycled or have a certified sustainable origin.
Along with the demand for sustainable criteria, the new range of Foodie salads responds to the growing consumer concern for a balanced and healthy diet; as well as the need to have ready-to-eat dishes. The line has two references, already available in the market: Calvo Foodie Chickpea Salad, with quinoa, tuna and vegetables; and Calvo Foodie Edamame Salad with quinoa, spelled, tuna and vegetables. Two complete and nutritionally balanced recipes with a greater presence of seeds, cereals, legumes and vegetables among its ingredients.
