NEW BEACH CLEAN INITIATIVE FOR PETERHEAD

A new beach clean initiative for Peterhead, with the Port Authority supporting a new programme designed to help clean up beaches of the north-east of Scotland by harnessing the power of local communities.

The East Grampian Coastal Partnership (EGCP) has appointed a project officer for two years to spearhead a series of clean-up events and an educational programme.

The first community beach clean under the Turning the Plastic Tide project, as it has been named, took place at Sandford Bay in Peterhead on Saturday 22^ndSeptember.

Peterhead Port Authority chief executive Simon Brebner said: “We are delighted to be able to support this very noble project. Marine litter is a subject that unites everyone, but the good news is that something can be done about it if we draw on the power of our fantastic local communities.”

Project officer Crawford Paris, a graduate of the University of Aberdeen MSc in Environmental Partnership Management degree programme, said he would be acting as a central point of contact with the goal of creating a coherent network of volunteers.

“It is an exciting opportunity to be involved in a project that is dealing with an issue that is more of a concern amongst the public today than ever before. I am keen to take an active role in reducing marine litter and look forward to getting to know more about this amazing stretch of coast and its people.”
