RAStech hosts RAS Connector Series Roundtable Panels

RAStech hosts RAS Connector Series Roundtable Panels.

RAStech will hold the second of three virtual events in its RAS Connector Series tomorrow, Sept. 14, 2021.

This second virtual event, titled ‘RAS Roundtable Panels’, will consist of four open-discussion panel sessions that will run throughout the day, focusing on the recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) sector’s current challenges, innovations, and solutions.

Panels include:

Tech meets bio (11:00 AM – 12:00 PM EST): A RAS design is only as good as the fish that it will grow. This panel will break down the mechanics of designing and building systems that combine innovation with fish welfare. Moderating this session will be Catarina Muia, editor of RAStech and Hatchery International magazines. Panelists include: Christopher Good, director of research at The Conservation Fund Freshwater Institute; Greg Beckman, vice president at Innovasea; Ramon Pérez, chief operating officer (COO) at Alpha Aqua; and Siri Tømmerås research and development (R&D) director at AKVA group Land Based.

Feed challenge (12:30 PM – 1:30 PM EST): Feeds are critical in RAS and can make or break a system. This panel will feature a discussion on the essentials of RAS feeds, the barriers for growth as well as the opportunities for more sustainable, RAS-friendly fish nutrition. Jason Mann, director of nutrition at Riverence Trout Farms will moderate this session, and will be joined by panelists: David Brock, aquaculture nutritionist at Rangen Feeds; Marc Turano, nutrition and technology lead at Cargill Aqua Nutrition – North America; and Steven Backman product manager at Skretting North America.

Waste management (2:00 PM – 3:00 PM EST): To be truly sustainable, land-based aquaculture must address and maintain environmental protection protocols throughout the fish and system’s lifecycles. This panel will clean up some misconceptions about wastewater treatment, and talk about keys to develop a sustainable waste management program for your RAS facility. This panel will be moderated by David Kuhn, associate professor of Food Science and Technology at Virginia Tech, who will be joined by panelists: Brittany Peachey, operations manager at Hudson Valley Fisheries; Christine Lepine, research associate at the Conservation Fund Freshwater Institute; and Ed Aneshansley, chief technology officer at HTL Sustainable Foods Inc.

The ins and outs of off-flavour (3:30 PM – 4:30 PM EST): Off-flavour can be off-putting. This panel will get to the meat of the matter in this lively panel discussion on what causes off-flavour in RAS, and how to mitigate them. Moderating this panel will be Andrea Dietrich, adjunct professor of Food Science and Technology at Virginia Tech. Panelists include: John Davidson, research scientist at the Conservation Fund Freshwater Institute; Niels O. G. Jørgensen, associate professor at the University of Copenhagen; Raju Podduturi, research scientist at Atlantic Sapphire; and Steve Atkinson, founder of Taste of BC Aquafarms.

Each session will consist of a 40-minute open-panel discussion between moderators and the panelists, with the last 20 minutes of the session to be a Q&A period between the audience and panelists. After each session during the 30-minute networking breaks, audience members and panelists will have the opportunity to visit the virtual exhibition hall, where they can speak to exhibitors and learn about today’s RAS innovative products, technologies, and solutions.

The RAS Connector Series consists of three virtual events:

– RAS Investors Forum (June 9, 2021)

– RAS Roundtable Panels (September 14, 2021)

– RAS Virtual Summit (November 3, 2021)

“We’re very much looking forward to part two of our three-part RAS Connector Series. With the pandemic still not letting up, it was the right decision to go with a multi-day virtual event strategy throughout 2021,” says Jeremy Thain, associate publisher of RAStech magazine and a RAS Connector Series organiser. “It means that RAS industry professionals worldwide can continue to connect with each other safely online, and discuss future RAS projects, RAS technology, best fish farming practices, and more.”

Industry professionals are able to register for USD $75 at www.rasconnectorseries.com, giving them access to all three live event days in the series, as well as access to on-demand content until December 31, 2021. This includes recordings of all live event day content. The series wraps up with the annual RAS Virtual Summit, taking place on November 3.
