VISIT OF MEP ISABELLE LE CALLENNEC TO ZUNIBAL

Visit of MEP Isabelle Le Callennec to Zunibal.

  • Zunibal, a leader in technological innovation for the maritime and fishing sectors, welcomed MEP Isabelle Le Callennec.
  • This visit highlights the fundamental role of European companies in developing sustainable and advanced solutions for the global fishing industry.

With nearly three decades of experience in innovative solutions for sustainable tuna fishing, Zunibal had the honour of hosting MEP Isabelle Le Callennec at its facilities. The MEP had the opportunity to learn first-hand about the advanced solutions Zunibal develops in the field of intelligent satellite buoys. These buoys, designed and manufactured by Zunibal in Europe, incorporate artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies that optimise the identification of target species. Thanks to these innovations, fishers can plan more efficient routes, minimise fuel consumption, and reduce bycatch, significantly contributing to more sustainable fishing practices.

Zunibal also presented its initiatives in collaboration with scientific institutions and NGOs aimed at reducing the environmental impact of fishing activities. These initiatives include the development of biodegradable Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) and recovery programmes for FADs at risk of stranding in sensitive areas such as the Seychelles and Palmyra. Zunibal is also exploring projects to repurpose satellite buoys for applications like tracking marine debris and modelling currents, thus fostering a circular economy.

Ibone Rodríguez, CEO and shareholder of Zunibal, said:

“We are honoured to have hosted MEP Isabelle Le Callennec at our facilities. This visit highlights the importance of innovation and sustainability in the fishing sector and strengthens our commitment to developing technologies that contribute to more responsible and efficient fishing practices. We believe that collaboration between companies, institutions, and international organisations is essential to ensure a sustainable future for our oceans and fishing communities.”

The delegation showed particular interest in how Zunibal contributes to transparency and regulatory compliance within the fishing sector. The integration of advanced monitoring and data analysis systems facilitates compliance by European fleets with strict sustainability regulations, ensuring responsible marine resource management.

The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to continue promoting technologies that drive sustainability and strengthen Europe’s position as a leader in the global fishing technology market.
