Ocean Specialists, Inc. supports deployment of University of New Hampshire’s Ocean and Acoustic Observation System. Ocean and Acoustic Observation System will enhance regional ocean research in the Gulf of Maine.

Ocean Specialists, Inc. (OSI), an Advanced Ocean Systems company, has successfully completed its technical and operational support role in the deployment of the University of New Hampshire’s (UNH) Appledore Acoustic Array, an advanced coastal monitoring system installed off the coast of Appledore Island in the Gulf of Maine.

The Ocean and Acoustic Observation System enhances regional ocean research capabilities by enabling high resolution acoustic monitoring for environmental studies, fisheries science, national security, and long term ecosystem assessment.

OSI’s scope encompassed pre deployment engineering review, cable route assessment and survey, installation planning, and the design, procurement, installation, and commissioning of the terrestrial and subsea cable/fibre terminations. The team also conducted detailed reviews of vessel and deck operations and supported final system integration to verify full continuity and operational readiness of the array.

“Supporting UNH on the Ocean and Acoustic Observation System project reflects OSI’s commitment to advancing ocean science through reliable subsea systems engineering,” said Perry Wright, President of OSI. “Our team brought decades of experience in subsea cable systems, marine operations, and coastal infrastructure to ensure a safe, efficient, and technically robust installation.”

The successful deployment marks a significant milestone for UNH’s coastal research initiatives, expanding the university’s ability to collect continuous ocean and acoustic data critical to understanding changing ocean conditions in the Gulf of Maine.

“We value the collaboration with Ocean Specialists Inc.,” said Jennifer Mikis-Olds Interim Vice President for Research and Innovation and Research Professor in the UNH Centre for Acoustics Research & Education. “Their subsea expertise and operational leadership were essential to delivering this system safely and effectively.”

With the Ocean and Acoustic Observation System operational, UNH and regional partners will initiate systematic data acquisition to underpin marine research initiatives, guide fisheries decision making, support security focused studies, and maintain continuous environmental surveillance.
