DEVELOPMENT OF TWO NEW FIPS IN ECUADOR
Development of two new FIPs in Ecuador. The National Chamber of Fisheries in Ecuador has announced the signing of a momentous Interinstitutional Cooperation Framework Agreement with the Ministry of Production, Foreign Trade, Investments and Fisheries of Ecuador to promote the development of two important fishing improvement projects in the country.
TITI SHRIMP SUSTAINABILITY: Promoting Responsible Pomada Shrimp Fishing
One of the central agreements of this agreement is the launch of the ‘TITI SHRIMP SUSTAINABILITY’ project. This project’s main objective is to promote sustainability and responsibility in the marmoset shrimp fishery in Ecuador. Through public-private cooperation , the Ministry of Production and the National Chamber of Fisheries will work together to implement measures and practices that ensure the conservation of this vital resource for the Ecuadorian fishing industry.
“With this project, we are committed to guaranteeing the long-term sustainability of the resource, promoting responsible fishing practices and the protection of the marine ecosystem,” said Verónica Dahik, president of the CNP Pomada Shrimp Exporters Commission.
SMALL PELAGICS SUSTAINABILITY: Renewing Commitment to Small Pelagic Fish Fishing
In addition, the renewal of the cooperation agreement was signed to implement the ‘SMALL PELAGICS SUSTAINABILITY’ fishery improvement process, focused on the small pelagic fish fishery in Ecuador, which has proven to be a success in promoting responsible fishing practices and the sustainable management of fishing resources in this category.
Andres Arens, Vice Minister of Aquaculture and Fisheries, emphasised:
“The signing of these two agreements is a sign of our firm commitment to the sustainable use of small pelagic fish and pomada shrimp, as well as the preservation of our marine ecosystem. “We are determined to continue working together with the private sector in the development of sustainable and responsible fishing.”
Both projects highlight the importance of public-private cooperation in achieving common objectives related to sustainability and responsibility in fishing. The alliance between the public sector and the fishing industry is essential to successfully execute these improvement projects and guarantee a more sustainable future for fishing in Ecuador.
This agreement marks an important milestone in the sustainability certification aspirations of these fisheries, where the joint commitment of government authorities and the fishing industry.
During the subscription event, Rafael Trujillo, Executive Director of the CNP, also highlighted the important role of the Fisheries Authority and the Public Aquaculture and Fisheries Research Institute during the implementation of fishery improvement projects, as well as the work of the coalitions of companies that support these processes.
