INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON GHOST FISHING

International conference on ghost fishing

International conference on ghost fishing

On 7 and 8 November, the Institute of Marine Research and the Directorate of Fisheries in Norway have organised an international conference in Arendal on ghost fishing.

Ghost fishing is a major problem in all seas and contributes to an enormous unregistered take of fish and shellfish each year. Fishing pairs who are lost at sea continue to fish, often for years if they are not removed.

How extensive the problem is, who is working to solve it and how are we going to get ghost voyages away from the sea, is some of what the conference will try to answer.

The conference is organized by the Institute of Marine Research and the Directorate of Fisheries and will take place in Arendal Culture House. The conference itself starts on Tuesday 7 November and will end on Wednesday 8 November, while registration and an informal event are planned for the evening of Monday 6 November.

On Tuesday 7 November, there will be a review of what different actors and the environment are working with when it comes to ghost fishing, and we will touch on technology that has all been developed or is being planned to clear lost travel pairs from the seabed.

Day two, Wednesday 8 November, will be about raising awareness and methods to prevent travel loss. Here you will also get into travel technology and recycling.
