LEARNING WITH FISH HEROES!

Learning with FISH Heroes! This week sees Year 10 and Year 11 pupils at Barnes Wallis Academy getting a chance to learn how to prepare and cook fresh local fish.
Food teacher Lesley Westwood was supported by local Heroes Ish Fish UK of Grimsby, who supplied a huge plaice and a shoal of mackerel for the session. Simon Gray from the Food Teacher Centre talked about the bringing of seafood from the sea to the plate, highlighting careers and opportunities in the fish industry.
Simon Gray from the Food Teachers Centre:
“The programme will be a game changer for young people. A survey earlier in the year showed that 52 % pupils rarely or never cooked fish in school. We are going to improve that dramatically with masterclasses such as these”.
Mrs Westwood:
“I would like to thank The Food Teachers Centre for organising such an inspiring masterclass, particularly Simon who nursed the students through de-boning and gutting the fish. It has already inspired students to include the preparation of fish in their assessments. They loved the opportunity to work with fresh fish”.
The Fishmongers Company Programme Manager, Dr Eleanor Adamson said:
“Young people in the UK are eating less and less fish, missing out on the health benefits of seafood, and unaware of sustainable British food choices that are available on their doorstep. We are excited at the chance to work with the Food Teachers Centre to bring seafood straight into classrooms, and showcase the best of UK food choices”.
Supported by the Fishmongers Company’s Fisheries Charitable Trust, and Ish Fish UK Fish in School Hero is managed by the Food Teachers Centre the programme is set to reach over 60,000 pupils in 3 years.
