MONTEREY BAY AQUARIUM ANNOUNCES NEW APPOINTMENT

Monterey Bay Aquarium announces new appointment. Monterey Bay Aquarium announces the appointment of Dana Allen-Greil as chief marketing officer (CMO), beginning January 1, 2023. Allen-Greil takes the helm from current CMO Mimi Hahn, who is retiring after a 35-year career at the Aquarium.
“I’m so excited for the vision, expertise, and imagination that Dana brings to our team as our new chief marketing officer. Her leadership will be instrumental for guiding the Aquarium boldly into the future,” said Monterey Bay Aquarium Executive Director Julie Packard. “Mimi identified Dana as her potential successor several years ago and has been working with her to ensure a smooth and steady transition.”
Allen-Greil, a Pacific Grove resident, will lead the Aquarium’s marketing functions including advertising, content strategy, communications and media relations, design and brand management, analytics, and sales and special events, which also includes oversight of retail and foodservice operations. In her previous role as vice president of marketing, she led the development and implementation of the Aquarium’s digital engagement strategy, while helping guide marketing strategy during the unprecedented 14-month period when the pandemic closed the Aquarium to visitors. She has also made significant contributions to the Aquarium’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility work.
She joined the Aquarium team in 2018, bringing nearly two decades of experience with cultural institutions including the Smithsonian Institution, the National Gallery of Art, and the National Archives. Allen-Greil holds a master’s degree in museum studies from George Washington University and has taught graduate-level courses on digital technologies for the museum studies programs at several prominent universities.
“It’s an absolute honour to take on the responsibility of leadership in an institution as beloved as Monterey Bay Aquarium,” said Allen-Greil. “I’ve benefitted immensely from Mimi Hahn’s mentorship and I’m looking forward to building upon her legacy of achievement, which has made us a leader in education, conservation, and financial performance.”
Hahn leaves after an esteemed three-decade career spent exclusively at Monterey Bay Aquarium. She plans to remain in Monterey County and will continue to serve on the boards of Montage Health, the Monterey Jazz Festival, and Big Sur Marathon Foundation.
“Mimi has been a major contributor to the Aquarium’s success, leading a marketing team that has seen us become the most admired aquarium in the world and a respected voice for conservation of our ocean planet,” said Packard. “She’s made an indelible impact here and across the aquarium world, and we will sincerely miss her.”
