STATE OF THE OCEAN 2024 REPORT LAUNCHED ON 3RD JUNE
State of the Ocean 2024 report launched on 3rd June. Iceland’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Marine and Freshwater Research Institute (MFRI) and UNESCO‘s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) hosted an open seminar on the occasion of the publication of the State of the Ocean Report 2024. The seminar was held on Monday, 3rd June at 10:00-11:15 in MFRI‘s headquarters at Fornubúðir 5 Hafnarfjörður and was held in English.
IOC UNESCO is responsible for the UN Ocean Decade 2021-2030 with the objective of coordinating national and global research efforts enabling us to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The State of the Ocean Report has the ambition to inform policymakers about the state of the ocean and to stimulate research and policy actions towards ‘the ocean we need for the future we want’, contributing to the 2030 Agenda and in particular SDG 14, as well as other global processes such as the UNFCCC, the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.
Þórdís Kolbrún Reykfjörð Gylfadóttir, Minister for Foreign Affairs, delivered opening remarks.
Bjarkey Olsen Gunnarsdóttir, Minister of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, talked about the importance of the Ocean to Iceland and the state of the Ocean.
Peter Thomson, UN Secretary-General‘s Special Envoy for Ocean Affairs, delivered a speech on the implementation of SDG14, life below water.
Vidar Helgesen, Executive Secretary IOC and Assistant Director-General of UNESCO, introduced the State of the Ocean Report and key messages.
Q&A session with the participation of some of the co-authors of the report.
