VIETNAM’S SHRIMP EXPORTS RISE IN THE US AND JAPAN

Vietnam’s shrimp exports rise in the US and Japan, Minh Phu surpasses Sao Ta in the land of the rising sun. In the first eight months of 2025, Vietnam’s shrimp exports reached 269,000 tons, up 1% year-on-year, with an estimated export value of USD 2.85 billion, an increase of 20%. White leg shrimp continued to account for the largest share, representing about 78% of total export volume.

In the US market, Vietnam exported 36,000 tons of whiteleg shrimp, down 13.4% in volume but only 1% in value, totalling USD 405 million. Among major exporters, Soc Trang Seafood Joint Stock Company (STAPIMEX) remained the leader, though its export volume dropped by 35% to 8,967 tons. Sao Ta Foods and Minh Phu Seafood recorded respective increases of 67% and 42%, with export volumes of 6,008 tons and 1,901 tons. Minh Hai Seafood achieved the strongest growth, exporting 1,774 tons, up 136% compared to the same period last year.

Experts noted that the impact of anti-dumping duties (33.29%) and countervailing duties (20%) will become more evident in Q4/2025, which is the peak consumption season in the US market. These high tariff rates may reduce the competitiveness of some Vietnamese exporters compared to suppliers from India and Ecuador.

In the Japanese market, Vietnam exported 26,800 tons of whiteleg shrimp, up 10.5% in volume and 16% in value, reaching USD 248 million. Minh Phu surpassed Sao Ta to become the largest Vietnamese shrimp exporter to Japan. Experts forecast that Japan’s shrimp import demand will continue to rise thanks to economic recovery and higher consumption during the Lunar New Year holiday.

With the global growth outlook for 2026 expected to remain modest, Vietnam’s shrimp industry is projected to recover slightly by 2–5%, provided that trade and tariff conditions remain favourable.
