PROFESSOR ADAM HUGHES’ LECTURE EXPLORES NEURODIVERSITY AND RESILIENCE

Professor Adam Hughes’ lecture explores neurodiversity and resilience

Professor Adam Hughes, newly appointed ‘Professor of Innovation in the Blue Economy’ at the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI), delivered his inaugural lecture at the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS) in Oban last week. The lecture, streamed worldwide to an audience of over 100, blended pioneering science with a powerful personal message: that resilience, determination, and diversity of thought are essential for the future of our oceans–and for academia itself.

Reflecting on his career, Adam spoke candidly about the challenges he faced as a neurodivergent student who struggled with conventional assessments and handwriting. He credited determination, support from mentors and family, and advances in technology such as word processing with helping him to overcome barriers and build a successful career in marine science:

“It wasn’t a given that I would be standing here today. There were many points along the journey where I could easily have fallen out of academia. My experience shows that diverse ways of thinking and learning aren’t just valuable – they’re essential. If we are to innovate for the future, we need as many perspectives as possible at the table.”

Using cultural references from his childhood and career, Adam illustrated the importance of innovation in the Blue Economy – finding ways for ocean industries to grow sustainably while replenishing natural capital for future generations. He argued that this innovation requires not only scientific research, but also the insights of industry, policymakers and communities.

Professor Nick Owens, Director of SAMS, praised the address:

“Adam delivered an outstanding lecture which beautifully combined personal reflection with thought-provoking ideas about sustainability and innovation. His call for diversity – in knowledge, skills, and neurotypes – is a powerful reminder of what it will take to build a resilient Blue Economy.”

Professor Brian Williams, Deputy Principal Academic and Research at UHI, congratulated Adam on his professorship:

“Adam’s appointment as Professor of Innovation in the Blue Economy is a testament to his outstanding contributions to marine science and sustainable economic development. His work has already had a significant impact on Scotland’s marine sector, and this role will further strengthen SAMS and UHI’s commitment to driving innovation, research and collaboration in the Blue Economy. We are delighted to see his expertise and leadership recognised in this way.”

Adam’s appointment underlines UHI’s commitment to addressing global challenges such as climate change and biodiversity loss through place-based research, education, and innovation. His work has already secured millions of pounds of research and innovation investment into Scottish aquaculture and marine industries, with direct benefits to coastal communities.

He added:

“UHI is a brilliant institution. What makes it unique is the ability to study and do world-class research in rural and coastal communities. That opportunity is priceless – for me, and for the students who follow.”
